Michael Irvin

People said something wasn't right when he rode with TO re: an aged, interception-laden QB (the Farve) being able to lead an Eagles to a perfect record. My wife said something was right about him the other night when he was pontificating about some point on ESPN. Looks like they were all on to something.

Football's over...

... in Philly anyway. Donvan's done. So is Lito. McMahon almost lost his chest cavity in the first quarter.

Can we blame TO for all of this? I dunno. I do know that TO's not playing corner, giving up big plays every game.

I gotta give it to Troy "stepping on a dying man" Aikman, who, during the Giants/Eagles broadcast, basically said that all of those trips to NFC championship were for nothing cuz the deal wasn't sealed and the window's been blown shut. Other cats are saying that Donovan's better days are behind him. Well, I guess that's either going to be the truth or bulletin board material for McNabb's summer training. Either way, we've all seen how effective throwing deep routes to Todd Pinkston is.

And while we're keeping it real, let's face it - a 9-1 or 8-2 Eagles team with a functional McNabb/TO onfield relationship and a healthly, scrambling #5 taking the snaps is not going to outscore the Colts in the big one.

Now, let's get back to basketball. Somebody get Dalembert a bionic quad muscle and get him back on the court, cuz until he's back, the line is wide-open, serving 2 for 1 layups from 7:00 until 9:00. D. Wade and 'Bron played us last week like NBA Live.

Some Quick & Random Observations

The Sixers may not be as bad as I thought they were going to be. And the Pacers may not be as good as everyone else thinks.

Michael Jordan was right about Kwame Brown. I'll keep C-Webb.

Shouldn't Darko be an All-Star by now? Send him to the D-League for some tick.

Donovan McNabb not playing this Sunday is a make or break move for the season. But if they win w/ McMahon, does he stay on the field? And by the way, what happened to Koy (don't get me wrong, I'd go w/ McMahon, too, but let's call it for what it is then and say Koy's been the #3 QB slash designated field-goal holder all along)?

After McNabb threw that pick Monday night, did TO look in the mirror and say, "See, I knew you were right about that guy all along."

I wish my daughter did not inherit my stubborness so early. It's going to be a rough year.

Now That The Dust Has Settled...

...we realize that things can get even dirtier in the next few weeks.

The aftermath of the TO dismissal in Philly is almost the same as SEPTA returning to work. Among the masses, its almost a non-issue. Was there even a strike? Did TO play for us? I've never seen a situation where a man is embraced as the savior of the city, a virtual Moses Malone, if you will, and can be promptly, and most unexpectedly, shown the door with such public approval. If there's a life lesson to be learned in all of this, its that the high road (The McNabb Way) wins in the end. Or better yet, play your position. Freddie couldn't just catch the ball and shut up. You see where he is. Crazy enough, Pro Bowlers aren't exempt either. After a while, people just get tired.

And I think that's the key word in Philly. We are tired. We were tired of coming in second so we brought TO to town, fighting to the end, even after it seemed like he would be a Raven. He talked his way out of that one. Guess we didn't care, since he would be wearing Eagles green. We turned the other cheek so many times when his past was brought up, and at first, he made it easy. Donovan and TO making all of the media rounds (hey, weren't 50 Cent and The Game cool once, too?). The Super Bowl marked the beginning of the end. Second, again. The city forgave. Looked forward to "next year" as we always do. Barring injury and/or curse, it would be promosing. Until TO started to talk. And people started to grow tired.

Personally, I think he's gifted and crazy. Skip Bayless, in one of the better articles I've read on the topic, agrees. And everyone who's stretching to take TO's side is crazy, too. His apology - too little, too late. If I'm running a team, a company, whatever, I damn sure don't want someone belittling the franchise and the franchise player in the same breath. Granted, TO's a rare talent, so you work with him. That's the only reason why he didn't get dropped at training camp. But now... escallating the issue, for whatever reason, when the team is mired in a 4-4 record, trying to stumble into the playoffs and hope the can regain some sort of stride... nobody needs additional distractions. Especially not internally. Donovan's hernia is more than enough.

Everyone is resolved to move on. That's great. Makes me think of a few key issues. 1) Remember Todd Pinkston. Funny how no one is mentioning his season-ending injury now, or Todd at all. Guess that shows where he stands, which brings us to point #2. Remember why the Eagles never made it to the Super Bowl before Owens? Exactly. So, what now? What about next year. I hope the best for Reggie Brown in his career, but after 1 start and 1 TD, he's a loooooong way from TO.

My last, and probably most interesting point, is this - what do the Eagles do when TO is sent back to the team? His case goes into arbitration next week, and honestly, I don't know. Things seem to comfortable now. People are talking about "moving on," forgetting that this is TO we're dealing with. From an organzational standpoint, the Eagles did what they had to do. But like their record, things are 50/50 right now. If they were winning, maybe the have more to lose by ridding themselves. Or maybe the get cocky and go it alone, like the NFC Championships, when TO was injured. If they were 2-6, then you say eff it and tank. Maybe you cut TO outright and let him self-destruct a contender. But at 4-4, it's interesting. What if he's ordered back to the team, and only given a 1-game suspension? What if he and Donovan go to couples therapy? What if he agrees to drop Rosenhaus, is barred from the press, and gives every kid in Philly an XBox to win over the public again? I don't know. I'm sure the locker room will be divided, but they already were and dude has 6 TD's. I hope somebody is thinking about the scenarios because I have a feeling that this story is far from over.

On to the Sixers, if the beat the Lakers tonight, I'll take back everything I said about them in my last post. (Yeah, right).

Throwing in the Towel

Yeah, I know it's only the third game in the NBA season for the Sixers, but they were getting run by the Charlotte Hornets, or the Bobcats, or whoever's playing in Charlotte now. At home. When Charlotte comes to town, you pencil in a W. Unless you're on their level. Sadly, that's where Philly is.

The first week of the NBA season, you get a free preview of the league pass, so I've been flipping around on the other (more competitive and interesting) games, and I realized something. These other 30 teams are pretty good. Pick a squad, stack our 8-man rotation up against theirs, and it's all bad.

Kyle Korver is playing his way to the bench. But the back-up is John Salmons, which isn't great. Iggy's not shooting enough. C-Webb and AI are shooting too much. Nobody's playing D or rebounding. Dalembert's out, but to be honest, you can flip a coin between Stephen Hunter and Dalembert - foul-prone, limited offense, 10 points, 6 rebounds. This team simply isn't very good. Neither are the New York Knicks. Why Larry Brown left Detroit so that he can finish his coach career missing the playoffs, risking his health, is beyond me. Oh yeah, money and New York. Forgot about that.

But yeah, back to Philly, a few minutes left in the 3rd, and down by 15. You're not supposed to have to make a run against Charlotte. Especially not at home. 0-3 is 15 minutes away. Tomorrow, Indiana. 0-4. The hole has been dug. We will lay in it, motionless, for the rest of the season. The good thing is, I know the truth now, so I don't have to watch anymore. See you at the draft lottery!
